Arsenal Eye Inter Milan's Esposito as Summer Striker Target After Gyokeres Fails to Fire

Sitting pretty atop the Premier League table by four points, Arsenal aren't resting on their laurels in the transfer market. Despite a frustrating 1-1 stalemate against Brentford on Thursday, Mikel Arteta's side are already plotting their summer business, with a new striker firmly in their sights.

The Gunners' recent activity speaks volumes about their ambition. They've swept through the Champions League group phase with a perfect eight wins, booked their place in the League Cup final courtesy of a victory over Chelsea, and remain in the FA Cup hunt. Yet despite splashing over £250m last summer to bolster their ranks, they're eyeing further reinforcements.

The problem? Viktor Gyokeres hasn't quite delivered the goods. The Swedish striker arrived from Sporting CP for around £64m in the summer window, having plundered 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese side. However, his Arsenal form tells a different story—11 goals across all competitions masks a meagre tally of just six in the Premier League from 22 outings.

Enter Pio Esposito. The 20-year-old Inter Milan academy product has caught Arsenal's attention as they hunt for a young, elite-level forward to develop over time. Esposito has five goals and five assists in 31 competitive appearances for the Serie A giants this term, though he's made 20 of those outings from the bench.

According to reports, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is keeping close watch on the situation, with the club's Italy-based scouts providing detailed assessments. The plan, sources suggest, would involve bringing Esposito to the Emirates initially as a backup option before nurturing his development into a long-term asset.

The young Italian has already earned significant backing from established names in the game. Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, has waxed lyrical about Esposito's prospects, telling DAZN: "He will be a step above anything you think he can be because I was lucky enough to be with him and to see him move on and off the pitch, and in the locker room. He's a professional, he has humility, a determination, a desire to learn, and an enthusiasm for being part of the team that I've seen in very few."

Inter Milan boss Christian Chivu has similarly enthused about his young charge, particularly following a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo earlier this season. "He gave a response on the field, both in Amsterdam and tonight," Chivu reflected. "Despite being so young, he handles the pressure well, he can also handle the physical duel on the pitch, and works hard for the team. I'm very pleased with how he is doing. The strikers complete each other… Pio can do a bit of everything: I'm happy for him."

With Arsenal's title credentials looking increasingly solid and their European credentials beyond reproach, a summer move for a prospect of Esposito's calibre could prove the perfect long-term investment.
