Arsenal Ready to Offload Gyokeres as Alvarez Deal Could Shatter Transfer Record

Arsenal have signalled their willingness to move on from Viktor Gyokeres in the summer window, marking a dramatic shift in fortunes for the Swedish striker barely 12 months after his £64m arrival from Sporting CP.

The 48-game campaign has yielded 18 goals across all competitions, yet Gyokeres' overall contribution has drawn considerable flak from pundits and supporters alike. His fall from grace became apparent when Mikel Arteta opted to deploy Kai Havertz in his stead during last weekend's 1-0 triumph over Newcastle—a result that restored Arsenal to the summit of the Premier League.

Paul Merson bucked the trend of criticism over the weekend, insisting the Swede retains significance for Arsenal's push down the final stretch. Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson highlighted Gyokeres' value in Europe's crucible: "He will still play a big part in it. For me, he plays in Europe on Wednesday night because he will hold the ball up. Arsenal will be under pressure and it will be a difficult game for them in Madrid. That's when you need Gyokeres to get you a throw in down the touchline, he runs after lost causes. The biggest time the whole crowd lifted today was when he cleared the ball from a corner and chased it down there and won it back and it lifted everybody."

Yet the appetite for fresh faces appears to have taken hold. Reports now suggest Arsenal are receptive to offers for Gyokeres as they contemplate cutting their losses on the former Sporting man.

Julian Alvarez looms as a tantalising prospect to fill any void left by Gyokeres' potential departure. However, acquiring the Atletico Madrid talent would demand considerably deeper pockets than those required for Declan Rice, who cost the Gunners £105m in July 2023.

Barcelona harbour their own designs on the Argentina international, with the La Liga heavyweights viewing him as their principal summer objective. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Barça supremo Deco has conducted multiple conversations with Alvarez's representatives, though negotiations remain in their infancy.

Atletico, naturally, are minded to retain their prized asset and have valued him beyond the £104m fee that saw Antoine Griezmann depart for Barcelona in 2019. Arsenal have already made preliminary enquiries earlier this year, positioning themselves among several Premier League suitors monitoring the situation.
