Odegaard's Arsenal Future in Doubt as Gunners Plot Summer Shake-Up

Martin Odegaard's position at Arsenal is far from secure heading into the summer transfer window, with Spanish reports suggesting the Norwegian captain could be moved on in a shock departure.

The mood around the Emirates has darkened considerably in recent weeks. A Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City, an FA Cup exit courtesy of Southampton, and a slip in the Premier League title race have all contributed to a sense of unease. Arsenal currently sit three points clear of City, though Pep's side have a game in hand to play, while a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg offered at least some encouragement.

With summer recruitment on the agenda, the Gunners are exploring ways to strengthen their squad. According to reports emerging from Spain, Odegaard is not considered untouchable by Mikel Arteta – a development described as a "major surprise." The club's strategy involves using the transfer market tactically, and should an acceptable offer materialize, negotiations could well take place.

The midfielder has attracted interest from several quarters. Inter Milan and Aston Villa have both identified him as a solution to their creative midfield needs. The Italian side could offer him a more favorable tactical setup, while the Villans would provide the chance to maintain his Premier League status within an ambitious framework.

Kostov Emerges as Potential Successor

Enter Vasilije Kostov. The Red Star Belgrade attacking midfielder, just 17 years old, has caught the attention of transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, who revealed that Arsenal are now monitoring the prospect closely.

Romano outlined the club's interest during a YouTube update: "Arsenal have been following Kostov, and they're following him closely. They made contact with people close to the player, they're considering a move for him."

The youngster has already attracted the gaze of Italian and German clubs, but Arsenal's scouting network has identified genuine potential. Romano stressed that while nothing is imminent, the Gunners' interest is serious and they are actively tracking his development ahead of a potential summer approach.

"Arsenal want to invest also on talents, not only on established players," Romano explained, suggesting the club's recruitment philosophy extends beyond marquee signings.

Captaincy Concerns

The debate surrounding Odegaard intensified following his removal during Wednesday's Champions League encounter with Atletico. Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara suggested the 26-year-old's captaincy should be reconsidered.

"Getting dragged off in a Champions League semi-final when you're the captain is never a good look," O'Hara told talkSPORT. "Last season he wasn't great either. He's been terrible this season."

O'Hara believes Arsenal may be evolving beyond their current captain. "I do believe that Arsenal may be growing away from Odegaard," he said. "Maybe they've got to look at a player who can come in and be that talisman."

The former Spurs man concluded: "He needs to buck his ideas up because he will end up falling down the pecking order. I don't think he can be the captain anymore."
