Real Madrid's Premier League Shopping Spree: Arsenal's Wonderkids on Radar

Real Madrid's scouts have been casting a wide net across the Premier League, and they've zeroed in on some particularly promising young talent. Arsenal's rising stars Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman have caught the eye of the Spanish giants, who are actively monitoring their development alongside six other top-flight prospects.

The Bernabéu outfit's interest in English players has been validated by one of their most successful recent acquisitions. Jude Bellingham's arrival from Borussia Dortmund in June 2023 for £115million proved to be a masterstroke, with the midfielder already establishing himself as one of the world's elite performers and helping Madrid claim both the Champions League and LaLiga titles.

That success has emboldened Real Madrid to continue their English recruitment strategy. A source close to the club explained the thinking to transfer insider Graeme Bailey: "Of course, we are aware of top talents in the Premier League. It is not easy, given the strength of the clubs in England, but the youth set-up is so impressive now – it would be illogical for us not to be looking. The club is determined to keep close tabs on the best young players in England. The pathway has been made by Bellingham."

With club president Florentino Perez pulling the strings, Madrid are understood to be prepared to strike whenever opportunities present themselves.

Beyond the Arsenal duo, Tottenham's Archie Gray has emerged as a target. Madrid have admired the midfielder since his days at Leeds United, and Spurs' potential Championship demotion could present a chance to negotiate a bargain deal. Also on the watchlist are Jobe Bellingham (the younger sibling of Jude), Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly, Chelsea's Josh Acheampong and Jesse Derry, and Wolverhampton's Mateus Mane.

The prospect of Real Madrid's interest will undoubtedly set alarm bells ringing at Premier League clubs, given the Spanish side's considerable appeal and resources.

Nwaneri holds the distinction of being the Premier League's youngest-ever player, having made his debut in September 2022 at just 15 years and 181 days. Dowman sits second on that particular honour roll, coming off the bench for his top-flight bow in August at 15 years and 235 days.

Both youngsters have secured lengthy contract extensions with the Gunners, providing some reassurance on the Arsenal front. Currently, Nwaneri is halfway through a six-month loan at Marseille, where he has contributed one goal and one assist across six outings. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder is gaining valuable experience abroad, with the plan to return to N5 refreshed and more complete this summer.

Dowman's path to regular football hit a bump when an ankle injury sidelined him just as he was beginning to feature in Mikel Arteta's plans. The 16-year-old right winger has recently returned to action with Arsenal's U21 side as he works his way back to full fitness.
