Newcastle Lead Race for Arsenal's Nwaneri as Arteta Eyes Upgrades

Newcastle have positioned themselves as frontrunners in the scramble to land Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, with insider sources suggesting the Magpies are locked in substantive talks to secure the 19-year-old's services this summer.
The midfielder, who has clocked up 51 appearances since graduating through Arsenal's Hale End academy, endured a torrid loan spell at Olympique Marseille during the second half of the Gunners' title-winning campaign. Nwaneri managed just 322 minutes across Ligue 1 and failed to feature in any of his side's final four matches, with Roberto De Zerbi's departure from the French club fundamentally altering the landscape of his temporary move.
Mikel Arteta's willingness to move Nwaneri on marks a subtle shift in thinking. Back in March, transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano suggested the Arsenal boss intended to reintegrate the academy product into his plans, emphasizing the club's unwavering faith in the youngster despite his disappointing stint abroad.
"Arsenal maintain full confidence in the player," Romano said at the time. "They believe in Nwaneri 100%. In the summer, they will speak to the player to understand what's the best situation for him, whether it's staying at Arsenal or maybe going on loan somewhere else."
Yet subsequent reporting has revealed a change of direction. Arsenal are now receptive to a permanent sale, with Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa, and Italian outfit Como all circling the prospect.
According to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, the Tyneside club have emerged as the clear leader in the hunt. "Nwaneri to Newcastle seems to be the favourite position right now, that's where the talk is," Wyness told Football Insider. "I'm told that's where the biggest, firmest discussions are right now."
The shift reflects Arteta's apparent appetite for a different calibre of recruit. "If there's going to be a strengthening of Arteta's squad, it's going to be at a higher quality and a higher level than Nwaneri," Wyness added. "He can do a job better at Newcastle, where he'll get more minutes. So that sort of thing makes sense for him to have another loan."
