Mourinho Backs Calafiori Deal as Real Madrid Eye Arsenal Defender

Jose Mourinho has signalled his backing for Real Madrid to make a move for Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori, with the transfer now deemed "feasible" as the Spanish giants plot their defensive reinforcements.

The Portuguese boss touched down in Madrid on Tuesday ahead of his official unveiling as the club's new head coach, returning to the Bernabéu for a second stint in charge. Real Madrid have already wrapped up free-transfer signings of Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate this summer, yet Mourinho remains keen to bolster his backline further.

Calafiori has emerged as a target despite enduring an injury-plagued campaign at Arsenal. The Italian international has previously spoken warmly of Mourinho, even though the manager opted to sell him during their time together at Roma. "Mourinho and I talk; he wrote me several messages, and there's a nice relationship between us," Calafiori reflected. "He forged my character and personality. The fact that he asks you for 200 percent in every training session and that he makes his choices by looking at what you give on the pitch."

Fabrizio Romano had identified Calafiori as fitting the specific profile Real Madrid are hunting—a defender capable of operating centrally and on the left flank. With Ferland Mendy battling ongoing injury concerns and Alvaro Carreras the only other left-back option, Madrid are keen on a player offering positional flexibility.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Mourinho values Calafiori's versatility, particularly his ability to shift between two and three centre-back systems during matches. The manager has concerns about his current right-backs—Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries—being too offensively inclined, meaning he wants left-sided defenders with a more cautious approach to maintain tactical balance.

Calafiori came through Roma's academy during Mourinho's tenure there, receiving regular opportunities under the manager's watch. Real Madrid view him as a more affordable option than Josko Gvardiol, with both players representing Mourinho's approved targets for the left flank. Should Calafiori arrive, Fran García would likely depart, with Carreras—a €50 million summer signing—staying put as part of the squad.
