Arteta's Personal Crusade for Guimaraes: Arsenal's Midfield Mission Faces Newcastle Stonewall

Mikel Arteta has made his admiration for Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes abundantly clear, with the Arsenal manager personally spearheading the club's efforts to land the Brazilian midfielder this summer. However, the Gunners face a brick wall at St James' Park, where Newcastle have flatly refused to entertain selling one of their prize assets.

Arsenal's Premier League title triumph last season, coupled with their Champions League final appearance, has left Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta determined to bolster their midfield ranks. Guimaraes sits atop their shopping list, but their initial approach has already been rebuffed. A verbal offer was turned down, followed by a formal bid of £55 million that met the same fate.

The 28-year-old, currently representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, has long been on Arteta's radar. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the manager's genuine enthusiasm for the midfielder, noting that Arteta has been the driving force behind Arsenal's internal push for the deal. This isn't a new fascination either—Arteta has harboured interest in Guimaraes for some time, with the club previously considering moves in the past.

Yet Newcastle hold all the cards. The club's recent sales of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona have eased any financial pressures, leaving them in a position where they simply don't need to sell. The message from Tyneside is crystal clear: Guimaraes is not for sale at any price this summer.

Romano indicated that while Arsenal might yet make another attempt, the likelihood of success appears slim given Newcastle's resolute stance. The midfielder remains under contract at Newcastle until summer 2028, having joined the club in January 2022. His contribution has been substantial—31 goals and 32 assists across 195 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies.

For Arsenal, the pursuit may continue, but breaking Newcastle's resolve will require either a dramatically increased offer or a change of heart from the northeast club. At present, neither appears remotely likely.
