Arteta Makes Personal Pitch to Alvarez as Arsenal Chase €150m Atletico Star

Arsenal's manager has entered direct negotiations with Julian Alvarez in a bid to land the Atletico Madrid marksman ahead of the summer window, according to reports emerging from Spain.

The 26-year-old Argentine represents a prime target for the north London outfit, who are intent on bolstering their striking options. Viktor Gyokeres, signed from Sporting CP last summer, currently leads the line, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz providing additional depth in the position. Nonetheless, Arteta remains keen to add further firepower to his arsenal.

Initial contact between Arsenal and Alvarez's representatives came around the Christmas period, but the club has now escalated matters with the manager himself getting involved. Spanish journalist Matias Palacios disclosed that Arteta has now held talks directly with the player, with both PSG boss Luis Enrique and Barcelona manager Hansi Flick similarly making their cases.

The asking price sits at €150 million (£130m) for a player who has already tasted considerable success. Alvarez collected two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and a Champions League trophy during his Manchester City days before switching to the Spanish capital in summer 2024. His medal cabinet also includes a 2022 World Cup winner's medal and back-to-back Copa America triumphs with Argentina in 2021 and 2024.

Yet there's a complication: Catalan sources insist Alvarez's heart lies with Barcelona, despite the overtures from London and Paris.

The striker himself has sought to dampen speculation, addressing the chatter ahead of Atletico's Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal at the Metropolitano on Wednesday evening.

"Something new comes out every week," Alvarez explained. "I don't waste my energy on that. Instead, I focus on what we're doing here. This is the most important time of the season, and I want to be in top form to help the team achieve great things."

He continued: "I can't be constantly clarifying or denying things. I don't pay attention to social media because it often becomes a snowball of lies. That's why I save my energy for what matters—helping the team."
