Alvarez Digs In for Barcelona Despite Arsenal's €50m Atletico Agreement

Julian Alvarez is holding firm on his Barcelona ambitions, turning a blind eye to Arsenal's apparent breakthrough in negotiations with Atletico Madrid.

On June 17, El Chiringuito TV's Jota Jordi reported that Atletico have hammered out a deal with the Gunners to offload Alvarez for €50 million (£43.3m), with Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres heading in the opposite direction as part of the arrangement. Arsenal have made no secret of their interest in the former Manchester City forward, particularly after Real Madrid's €150 million (£130m) approach fell flat earlier this month.

Yet none of this cuts any ice with Alvarez himself. According to Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old remains absolutely resolute in his pursuit of the Catalan club, refusing to budge despite the reported Arsenal-Atletico arrangement. Currently representing Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez has point-blank rejected any transfer scenario that doesn't involve Barcelona.

The publication notes that his consistent rejection of overtures from both Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal has actually bolstered Barcelona's conviction that they retain a genuine pathway to landing him. However, the Spanish champions face a knotty problem: they acknowledge the deal won't happen without Alvarez taking a more forthright public stance on his intentions.

Barcelona's opening gambit—a €100 million (£86.7m) bid—was rejected by Atletico, who have repeatedly insisted the player is not for sale. Mundo Deportivo adds that the Blaugrana have no plans to table a second offer at this stage.

Back in May, Ray Parlour weighed into the debate, urging Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta to pursue Alvarez. Speaking to Metro on May 3, the former Arsenal midfielder made the case for recruitment: "I think Jesus might leave at the end of the season, he is at that age where he wants to be playing week in, week out. We could lose him."

Parlour continued: "For me, Alvarez would be a great addition to the squad. There will always be people coming and going in the summer because it's a big squad and they can't keep everyone happy. But Alvarez would be a fantastic option to have with his pace and what we saw at Man City. It was always going to be difficult for him playing with Erling Haaland there but when he did start and when he did play, he was always lively. He's a young man too, so if he's available it's a yes for me. When know how Arteta likes to work with young players to make them better so I think it would be a great addition, definitely."
