Arsenal Eye Record-Breaking Teenage Striker as Kofane Emerges as Priority Target

Arsenal have moved to confirm their pursuit of a teenage striker who would shatter the Premier League's transfer record for young players should the deal materialise.

Manager Mikel Arteta has publicly maintained his satisfaction with Viktor Gyokeres' development during his opening campaign at the club. Whispers emanating from Spain in late-March pointed towards Arsenal's admiration for Bayer Leverkusen's Christian Kofane, with unconfirmed reports suggesting an initial €50m (£43m) probe had been lodged. Those early claims lacked substance, but fresh intelligence from Germany now lends credibility to the broader narrative.

Sky Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg has now verified Arsenal's genuine monitoring of the 19-year-old, complete with specific financial details. According to his reporting, Leverkusen are demanding between €60m and €70m to part with their prospect come summer, with several elite English outfits circling alongside Real Madrid.

Kofane featured for the full 90 minutes in both of Leverkusen's Round of 16 encounters with Arsenal in European competition, though he failed to breach the net on either occasion. Nevertheless, his performances have clearly caught the attention of the Gunners' decision-makers.

Should Leverkusen secure the upper end of their asking price before the Cameroon international's 20th birthday in late-July, he would become the Premier League's costliest teenage acquisition. That honour currently sits with Leny Yoro, whose 2024 move from Lille to Manchester United carried a €70m valuation—though €8m of that comprised performance-related add-ons that may never materialise.

The numbers Kofane has posted this season—seven goals and eight assists across 39 outings—might appear modest at first glance. Context matters considerably, however. At just 19 and having accumulated 1,745 minutes with a significant portion arriving off the bench, he's generating a goal contribution every 116 minutes. For a teenager operating at such elite level, those metrics represent genuinely encouraging form.
