When Will Timber Be Back? Injury Expert Weighs In on Arsenal's Defensive Crisis

Arsenal's defensive woes deepened this week with Jurrien Timber still sidelined and no clear timeline for his comeback. The Gunners' injury crisis has coincided with a dip in form that has seen their Premier League lead evaporate, with Manchester City now just three points adrift and holding a game in hand.

Timber limped off after 38 minutes during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton on March 14, with a groin complaint that has proven far more troublesome than initially hoped. Recent defeats to Bournemouth and City have laid bare the gap left by the Netherlands international's absence, particularly in Arsenal's defensive stability and set-piece management.

Following Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League semi-final first leg draw against Atletico Madrid, manager Mikel Arteta offered little reassurance about when his stricken right-back might feature again. "We don't know yet," Arteta said. "He is doing some stuff on the pitch at the moment. But we need to get the gears up and be able to do more things before he can compete with us."

In the meantime, Arteta has rotated Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White through the right-back role, a makeshift arrangement that has clearly unsettled the side's rhythm.

The Grade Two Diagnosis

Stephen Smith, chief executive and founder of Kitman Labs, has suggested Timber's injury may be more significant than a minor strain. Speaking to the Metro, Smith indicated the defender could be dealing with a grade two groin injury—a partial tear of muscle or tendon.

"Six weeks into his rehabilitation, we're beyond the grade one stage," Smith explained. "Grade one injuries are usually just a handful of fibres torn or overstretched, typically requiring one to three weeks recovery. Grade two is considerably more serious—we're looking at a three to eight week window."

Smith offered a glimmer of optimism, however. "He is in that three to eight week window right now, which suggests it looks likely to be a grade 2. There is potential light there in terms of how his rehab is progressing and potential light in seeing him involved soon before the end of the season."

A Squad Stretched to Breaking Point

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has highlighted how Timber's prolonged absence has exposed the fragility of Arteta's squad depth. Speaking on talkSPORT following City's victory over the Gunners, Keown was scathing about the defensive makeshift arrangements.

"We were on our third right-back," Keown said. "The injuries Arsenal have had have not helped them. Timber and Saka are not available. Perhaps Arsenal bit off more than they can chew competing in four competitions."

Keown pointed to the broader impact of the injury list, noting that without Riccardo Calafiori to orchestrate play from left-back and Timber's combative presence to harass Erling Haaland, Arsenal looked vulnerable. "No Timber and that tenacity he has to help deal with Haaland when he's doing his stuff," Keown added. "The squad players that come in meant Arsenal played with four central defenders yesterday."
