Arsenal Lead the Race for Atletico's Alvarez as Gyokeres Struggles Persist

Arsenal have emerged as the leading contenders to prise Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid when the transfer window reopens in summer, with the north Londoners keen to strengthen their attacking options.

Mikel Arteta's side are mounting their most convincing title challenge in over two decades. Currently sitting four points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa, the Gunners have finally shed their runners-up tag after three consecutive seasons of falling short. With over £250m invested in the summer recruitment drive, the board has given Arteta the backing to deliver Arsenal's first Premier League crown since 2004.

Yet one acquisition has proven a notable disappointment. Viktor Gyokeres, the Sweden international who plundered 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting CP, has managed just nine goals across 28 outings in all competitions. His five Premier League strikes represent a troubling return given the expectations surrounding his arrival.

The Spanish outlet El Desmarque reports that Arsenal 'are the frontrunners to sign the Spider in the next transfer window' as they look to reinvigorate their forward line following Gyokeres's inconsistent contributions. PSG and Barcelona have also registered their interest in the former Manchester City man, who has delivered seven goals and three assists in 21 La Liga matches this season.

Arsenal hold what could prove a significant advantage through Alvarez's representative Fernando Hidalgo, with the club's sporting director Andrea Berta maintaining 'a great relationship' with the agent. Yet Hidalgo has poured cold water on any suggestion of talks, telling El Desmarque: "There is no interest at the moment. I haven't met with anyone."

Arteta himself has resisted mounting pressure to abandon faith in Gyokeres. Following the recent 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, the manager emphasised patience, saying: "Let's assess him at the end of the season and even sometimes that is too short a sample. We also need to understand the league that we are competing in and what is happening to the (number) nines across the league and the manner that the game is changing. There are a lot of factors to bear in mind when we assess the player, and then we're going to assess him, not only in one aspect of the game but in many aspects of the game."

The Arsenal boss has previously indicated the club remains alert to opportunities, remarking that they "have to be actively looking" during the current window, though any move for Alvarez appears destined for the summer months.
