Ferdinand Warns Arsenal: Don't Sit Back Against City or Face a Hammering

Rio Ferdinand has delivered a pointed message to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, urging them to avoid a passive approach when they face Manchester City this Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Arsenal's title ambitions took a significant dent on Saturday when Bournemouth claimed a 2-1 victory, with Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott getting on the scoresheet either side of a Viktor Gyokeres penalty. That setback proved costly just 24 hours later when City dispatched Chelsea 3-0, cutting Arsenal's lead to just six points while maintaining a game in hand.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Manchester United stalwart was blunt about the dangers of retreating into a defensive shell. "If you go there and sit back like Liverpool did at PSG the other day, it's slapsville," Ferdinand declared. "You're getting pumped. You can't do that. Do you win leagues doing that?"

The Old Trafford icon identified a troubling pattern in Arsenal's display against Bournemouth—one that could prove fatal against City. Ferdinand highlighted how effectively the south-coast visitors had suffocated the Gunners' creativity. "The way City set up to block all passing lanes, pressing high—I don't think Bournemouth went four up the pitch in exactly the same way," he observed. "They were great in terms of blocking passing lanes, making Arsenal having to go over it or just panic a little bit and give the ball away."

The implication was clear: Bournemouth had essentially copied City's blueprint, and Arteta's team hadn't yet cracked the code. "I think that's the blueprint. Mikel Arteta and his team haven't found an answer yet," Ferdinand added. "It wasn't a good performance. At least get about and put it on some players."

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola was bullish about City's prospects following their demolition of Chelsea. The City boss credited his squad's mentality and competitive drive as the foundation of their resurgence in the title race.

"The hierarchy gave me the mentality of amazing players and competitive players, that is the key to success," Guardiola told reporters. "I push them, they push me. When you arrive in the last month and a half, with one title and in the other two competitions, it's because the team is really good. Arsenal is a final for us and for them as well."

Guardiola reserved particular praise for his side's second-half performance against Chelsea, attributing it to their mindset rather than tactical adjustments. "The second half was extraordinary because we had the mindset. In that stage it isn't the tactics. We know each other for a long time and the players showed a good mentality to win here which is never easy and be close to the top of the league."

The stage is set for a genuine title decider at the Etihad, where Arsenal cannot afford another slip-up.
