Fabregas Emerges as Top Candidate to Succeed Arteta as Arsenal's Managerial Crunch Point Looms

Mikel Arteta's position at Arsenal has entered critical territory, with club executives already eyeing potential successors should results dictate a managerial change.

Since taking the helm in late 2019, Arteta has earned considerable credit for rebuilding Arsenal into a European powerhouse. Yet the absence of any trophy since the 2019/20 season continues to weigh heavily, and the pressure has intensified as the campaign reaches its decisive phase.

The North London side boasts one of Europe's most talented squads and came tantalizingly close to an unprecedented quadruple before stumbling in both the FA Cup and League Cup. Now their attention turns to two remaining competitions that will define the season.

A Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid represents the "final exam" for Arteta's tenure, according to reports. Should Arsenal fail to navigate past the Spanish side, his position would become "very precarious." Meanwhile, any slip-up in the Premier League title race—where they risk dropping to second if Manchester City beat Burnley in their game in hand midweek—would generate considerable unease among the hierarchy.

David Ornstein previously reported that Arteta faces a genuine threat to his job unless Arsenal secure either the Premier League crown or Champions League glory. Spanish outlet Fichajes now claims his position is genuinely on the line, with every remaining fixture carrying existential weight.

Enter Cesc Fabregas. The Arsenal legend, currently managing Como in Serie A, has been identified as the club's favored option should a change become necessary. The report suggests Fabregas represents an "ideal replacement" should the board decide to alter course.

Not everyone agrees with such contingency planning, however. Jeremie Aliadiere, who wore Arsenal's colors during his playing career, believes the club should retain Arteta even if silverware remains elusive this term.

Speaking to AceOdds.com, Aliadiere praised the manager's transformative work: "I would never get rid of Mikel. The job he has done and the way he's transformed the club, the players he's brought in and how competitive the club is in the space of a few seasons is so impressive."

The former forward argued that finishing without trophies should be viewed as part of a learning process rather than grounds for dismissal. "I would take it as another learning curve and another season under his belt if Arsenal don't win anything this season," he explained, noting that this represents Arteta's first role as a number one manager.

Aliadiere acknowledged the frustration of supporters and the financial investment the club has made, but maintained that progress has been evident. "Give him more money in the summer to bring players in, let some players go, bring in fresh legs, ideas and blood and go again next season," he concluded.
