Desailly Eats Humble Pie Over Saliba: "I Got That One Badly Wrong"

Marcel Desailly has swallowed his pride and offered a public mea culpa to William Saliba, confessing he fundamentally underestimated the Arsenal defender's trajectory when the youngster first pitched up at the Emirates.

The legendary Chelsea stalwart watched Saliba anchor Arsenal's backline during a commanding 3-1 victory over Inter Milan—a performance that crystallized just how spectacularly Desailly had missed the mark.

Saliba's path to becoming one of the Premier League's premier defenders has been anything but straightforward. The Gunners forked out roughly £27m to prise him from Saint-Etienne back in 2019, but the French international needed time to find his feet. A succession of loan spells—first back home at Saint-Etienne, then stints at Nice and Marseille—proved invaluable for his development. His performances in Ligue Un earned him the Young Player of the Year gong before Mikel Arteta finally handed him his big opportunity in 2022/23.

Now, Desailly reckons he's witnessing something special. Partnered with Gabriel Magalhaes, Saliba has formed one of the most formidable defensive partnerships on the planet.

"I have to hold my hands up to William Saliba because I never anticipated he'd reach these heights," Desailly reflected. "When I first clapped eyes on him at Arsenal, I didn't reckon he'd become a world-class operator—that was a shocking call from me.

"The lad's demonstrated real leadership, remarkable consistency, and frankly, his best days might still be ahead. I'm genuinely impressed by how he's assimilated into Arteta's methods and become absolutely vital to their cause.

"Arsenal were crying out for that sort of character a few years back, and Saliba's stepped up. He's become part of the spine of this team and helped propel them into genuine title contenders."

Desailly also tipped his hat to Saliba's international prospects, suggesting France's World Cup squad will benefit immensely from having such a dependable centre-back in their ranks.

However, the former defender has urged Arsenal to keep their feet on the ground despite their commanding position. The Gunners hold a seven-point cushion over both Manchester City and Aston Villa in the Premier League standings, but Desailly reckons complacency could prove costly.

"The league's got plenty of twists and turns left in it," he cautioned. "Arsenal mustn't allow themselves to be pulled in too many directions with the Champions League and cup competitions all competing for their attention.

"Drop points in a fixture against someone like Manchester United this weekend, and you risk the momentum evaporating. Teams can struggle to bounce back mentally from setbacks in big matches—we've seen it countless times where one result triggers a downward spiral they can't escape.

"Arsenal have built a strong lead, but football teaches us that positions shift rapidly. That's precisely why it's the greatest game."
