Arsenal and Atlético Trade Blows Before Champions League Semi-Final Kick-Off

The stage was set for a Champions League semi-final showdown at the Metropolitano on Wednesday, but before a ball was kicked, Arsenal and Atlético Madrid found themselves locked in an altogether different battle—one fought on the turf itself.

After seeing off Sporting and Barcelona respectively, the two sides faced off in what promised to be a contrasting affair to the first semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, which had already delivered a breathless 5-4 opening leg.

With margins expected to prove razor-thin, Arsenal's ground staff became fixated on one particular detail: the length of the grass. Around an hour before kick-off, members of the Gunners' setup were spotted gesticulating and exchanging heated words with suited figures—believed to be UEFA officials—over the state of the pitch.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué provided CBS Sports with the inside track on what unfolded. Arsenal's concern centred on whether Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone had been employing his notorious tactical nous to gain an edge.

"The Arsenal ground staff came in thinking the grass is too high; they were not happy with it," Balagué explained. "They asked UEFA to actually measure it. They thought it was some Simeone 'dark arts'."

The measurement came back at 26mm, comfortably within UEFA's permitted range of 21mm to 30mm. Yet Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero acknowledged the complaint held merit for Atlético's purposes.

Del Piero highlighted that Atlético's reputation for defensive solidity masked a more nuanced threat. "People don't understand properly because we have this idea of Atletico and Simeone that they are amazing at defence," he noted. "They double up on players and run more than anyone. But the speed of the ball when they attack is unbelievable and look at the strikers they have: Lookman, Griezmann and Julián Álvarez. All of these guys need the ball and are technically excellent."

However, Del Piero viewed Arsenal's pre-match fixation on pitch conditions as symptomatic of a deeper malaise. With Manchester City having overtaken them in the Premier League title race, the Italian suggested the complaint revealed much about the Gunners' current predicament.

"I worry about Arsenal and Arteta bringing this up," Del Piero said. "It's a great picture of the moment of Arsenal. They are struggling a bit and need to have a look at every detail."
