Arsenal Step Up Araujo Chase as Arteta Approves £35m Left-Back Swoop

Arsenal have ramped up their interest in Sporting CP's Maximiliano Araujo ahead of the summer window, with Mikel Arteta having sanctioned a move for the left-back as a priority signing.

The Gunners sit atop the Premier League table following their weekend victory over Newcastle United, a 1-0 triumph that leaves them potentially six points clear of Manchester City when the champions return to league action after their FA Cup commitments. Nevertheless, the north London outfit's domestic title push runs parallel to their Champions League ambitions, keeping the squad stretched across multiple fronts.

Arsenal's summer recruitment will be comprehensive, with the left-back position identified as requiring reinforcement. Neither Myles Lewis-Skelly nor Piero Hincapie has delivered the standard expected this season, creating an opening for fresh investment in that area.

Spanish sources indicate that both Arsenal and Barcelona view Araujo as a shared target for their defensive reshuffling. The Gunners have now shifted into a higher gear in their pursuit, with reports suggesting the Emirates hierarchy has prepared an offer to bring the Sporting CP defender to England.
