Arsenal Hold the Upper Hand in Alvarez Pursuit as Atletico Madrid Set Eyebrow-Raising €500m Demand

Arsenal continue to lead the chase for Julian Alvarez, even as Atletico Madrid have reportedly slapped an eye-watering €500m price tag on their prized asset ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have been imperious in the Premier League this term, currently sitting nine points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table—though Pep Guardiola's outfit do have a game in hand and a trip to the Etihad next month still to come. Despite suffering League Cup final heartbreak against City last Sunday, Mikel Arteta's side remain alive in both the FA Cup and Champions League, and the Arsenal boss can expect substantial financial backing once again, having already invested over £250m in new recruits last summer.

Alvarez, the former Manchester City forward, has been firmly on Arsenal's radar, with Spanish outlets reporting in February that a £105m bid from the Gunners had been rejected. The club are actively hunting for strikeforce reinforcements to challenge Victor Gyokeres, who has disappointed since his own arrival and failed to deliver the expected impact this season.

When pressed on his future at Atletico Madrid earlier this month, Alvarez offered a characteristically non-committal response. "I don't know. Maybe yes, maybe no. I have nothing to say other than I'm happy," the Argentina international said. "On social media a lot of things get talked about, but it's nothing. We're very happy competing in all competitions, so everything is going very well."

Despite Atletico's seemingly outlandish €500m demand, reports suggest Arsenal remain in pole position to secure the 24-year-old's signature. Barcelona, traditionally one of Europe's heavyweight suitors, find themselves at a considerable disadvantage. The Catalan club are reportedly struggling to stump up just €30m to make Marcus Rashford's move permanent, a far cry from the astronomical sums required to prise Alvarez away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

While Barcelona would naturally prioritise Alvarez over Rashford—viewing him as a cornerstone piece rather than a squad rotation option—their financial reality at Camp Nou simply doesn't stack up against Arsenal's spending power. The Gunners, by contrast, have repeatedly demonstrated both the capacity and willingness to splash serious money on marquee signings, and would likely need to exceed €100m to get the deal done this summer. In a head-to-head contest between two of Europe's biggest clubs, Arsenal's deeper pockets have given them a clear edge.
