Salah Holds Crisis Talks as Slot Exit Opens Door to Stunning Liverpool Reversal

The plot thickens at Anfield. Mohamed Salah has reportedly called an urgent meeting with his representatives to discuss his future at Liverpool, now that Arne Slot has been shown the door following an end-of-season review.

The timing is rather delicious. Just weeks ago, the relationship between Salah and Slot appeared beyond repair. The winger publicly aired his grievances in December over limited playing time, claiming he'd been "thrown under the bus" by the Dutchman. Following Liverpool's 4-2 hammering at Aston Villa on May 15, Salah took another swipe, suggesting the team had "crumbled to yet another defeat" and emphasizing that players must embrace the club's "heavy metal" style—a thinly veiled criticism of Slot's tactical approach.

Yet circumstances have shifted dramatically. With Slot's departure confirmed, the final major obstacle to Salah remaining appears to have been removed. The Athletic reported on May 18 that Salah could be persuaded to stay if the club executed a managerial change and moved on certain directors, with sporting director Richard Hughes likely among those targeted.

"Not so long ago, some of Salah's associates in Egypt were quietly suggesting he had not totally given up on the idea of remaining at Liverpool, despite recent announcements," the Athletic's reporting indicated. "Yet for that to happen, a regime change would be needed — starting with Slot, but also in conjunction with departures of the directors who have confidence in him but are similarly only a year away from their contracts being finished."

While Salah and Liverpool had already agreed to terminate the final year of his contract, that decision could now be revisited. The question now centres on whether departures among the wider backroom staff will follow Slot's exit.

Iraola Set for Anfield Appointment

The club has wasted little time identifying Slot's successor. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is set to take over at Liverpool, emerging as the standout choice ahead of other candidates including Julian Nagelsmann and Sebastian Hoeness.

Liverpool's hierarchy believe Iraola can restore the attacking, entertaining football that characterized Jurgen Klopp's reign. Under Slot, the team has frequently been criticized for laboured, uninspiring performances that fell well short of the club's traditional standards.

The appointment makes particular sense given Hughes's existing relationship with Iraola, having previously brought him to Bournemouth. That familiarity could prove instrumental in smoothing the transition and potentially keeping Salah at the club.
