Gordon Dismisses Transfer Chatter as "Rubbish" After Four-Goal Qarabag Masterclass

Anthony Gordon has firmly shut down the rumour mill, branding transfer talk linking him to Arsenal and Liverpool as complete nonsense after his scintillating display against Qarabag in the Champions League.

The Newcastle winger, 24, has become something of a magnet for the transfer gossip columns in recent weeks, with various outlets suggesting a summer switch could be on the cards. His four-goal haul in Azerbaijan will only have cranked up the speculation about his market value, but Gordon is having none of it.

"It's the same old, same old," Gordon told ChronicleLive. "I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do. I haven't heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you. Of course. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish."

The 24-year-old stressed that no conversations have taken place between himself and any other club, dismissing the notion that such moves are imminent. He was previously the subject of Liverpool interest in 2024, when a move to his boyhood club seemed tantalisingly close, but Gordon is now concentrating solely on the here and now.

"I am focused on me and focused on the team, I am focused on right now," he explained. "You look too far in the future and you start to underperform. And believe me I have done that and I am not going to do that now."

Gordon's four-goal performance in Azerbaijan saw him become Newcastle's all-time leading scorer in European competition. Yet the winger, characteristically ambitious, felt he should have added two more to his tally. He missed chances he felt were gettable, and he wasn't about to let himself off lightly.

"Yeah, I should have scored more – I should have had six goals," Gordon said. "I missed two chances that I should score. I don't want to call them easy but they were chances that I should score. I am always looking for more. I scored four but I am that type of person, I am not fully happy with what I have achieved, it should have been six, maybe next time."

Despite Newcastle's commanding 6-1 victory, Gordon cautioned against complacency ahead of the return leg. "A tie is never dead – even at 6-1," he noted. "We have all watched football enough, anything can happen. They are a great team, they have a lot of quality, I actually think we just defended really well. We didn't give them many opportunities. But we have our mentality, and we look forward to the next leg."

Gordon is likely to be rested for the second leg after his starring role in the one-sided encounter.
