Tuchel's Path to Old Trafford: Why England's World Cup Campaign Holds the Key

The dust has barely settled on Ruben Amorim's Manchester United exit, and already the rumour mill is churning through potential successors. While several names circulate for the hot seat, one intriguing possibility has emerged: Thomas Tuchel could make the move to Old Trafford—but there's a rather significant catch attached.

Amorim departed on Monday morning, less than 24 hours following the 1-1 stalemate at Leeds. The parting of ways stemmed from mounting tensions behind the scenes, with reports pointing to a falling-out between the Portuguese manager and sporting director Jason Wilcox the previous week. The Leeds result may have been the final match of his tenure, but the real damage had already been done. United sit sixth in the Premier League standings, three points adrift of the top four but equally distant from the relegation scrap.

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher steps in as caretaker, with the club expected to bring in an interim figure for the remainder of the campaign before appointing a permanent manager come summer.

The Tuchel Scenario

The German currently commands England's national team, preparing the squad for this summer's World Cup finals in North America. A departure before the tournament concludes remains extraordinarily unlikely—particularly given his repeated assertions about his enthusiasm for the role and his commitment to the Three Lions' chances of lifting the trophy.

However, Telegraph reporting suggests a pathway exists whereby Tuchel could eventually land the United job. The catch? He would need to wait until after the World Cup concludes, with the club holding the position open and running an interim setup through the remainder of the season. Tuchel has made clear he won't abandon the FA midway through his tenure, having spoken extensively about his excitement for the tournament ahead.

The Competition

Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner currently sits as the betting favourite, with his contract expiring at season's end. Michael Carrick, who departed Middlesbrough last summer, also features prominently in discussions, as does Enzo Maresca following his Chelsea exit. Eddie Howe of Newcastle has attracted interest previously, whilst Gareth Southgate—who stepped down after the 2024 European Championship final defeat—represents another option the hierarchy appears to value.

Yet Tuchel carries the hallmarks of a "statement" appointment that Sir Jim Ratcliffe seemingly craves. The British billionaire held conversations with the former Bayern Munich, Chelsea, PSG and Borussia Dortmund manager during summer 2024, when Tuchel was available after his Bavarian stint ended. Back then, Ratcliffe ultimately opted to hand Erik ten Hag a new contract instead.

The irony isn't lost: having backed Amorim through dismal performances and a 16th-place finish, United now finds itself merely three points outside the Champions League qualification spots—yet the manager has still been dismissed.
