Amorim Eyes Martinez and Inacio for Milan Raid on Former United

Ruben Amorim is keen to reunite with familiar faces at his new AC Milan post, having already set his sights on raiding Manchester United for defensive reinforcements.

Since taking the Milan job in mid-June—his first managerial gig since departing Old Trafford—Amorim has wasted little time in plotting moves for players he knows well. Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello reports that the Portuguese boss is "crazy" about two defenders: Lisandro Martinez and Goncalo Inacio, with contact already made to explore potential signings.

Martinez spent limited time under Amorim at United, clocking up just 24 appearances before injury troubles curtailed his involvement. Yet the South American clearly left a lasting impression. Inacio, meanwhile, represents a more familiar quantity—the defender made 186 appearances under Amorim at Sporting CP, the third-highest tally of any player the manager has worked with.

United, however, are unlikely to oblige. The club's expectation is that they'll want to retain Martinez to avoid having to recruit another centre-back, particularly with midfield business taking priority this summer.

Amorim's interest in Mason Mount has already proven a non-starter. Despite reports suggesting Milan could lodge a £21.5million bid for the 27-year-old, United have dismissed any notion of a sale. Mount himself has no interest in departing Old Trafford and is currently working with a fitness coach in Spain ahead of pre-season, having endured a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

The Milan boss has already made his statement of intent in the transfer market, landing striker Goncalo Ramos as a record signing, with further additions likely on the horizon.
