Alvarez Makes His Choice: Barcelona Wins Out Over Madrid's Mammoth Bid

Julian Alvarez has made his decision—and it's Barcelona, not Real Madrid, despite Los Blancos' eye-watering approach this week.

The Argentine attacker, who joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City for £81m last summer, has informed all parties of his intentions. While flattered by Real Madrid's aggressive €150m (£130m) bid following Florentino Perez's reconfirmation as president and Jose Mourinho's appointment as manager, Alvarez's heart lies elsewhere.

In his two seasons at the Wanda Metropolitano under Diego Simeone, the 26-year-old has amassed an impressive tally of 49 goals and 17 assists across 106 appearances. That form has naturally attracted serious suitors.

Arsenal have long been keen admirers, with Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta holding talks with the player's representatives as far back as January to assess the feasibility of a deal. Barcelona, meanwhile, are hunting for a replacement following Robert Lewandowski's departure as a free agent.

But Alvarez's preference has been communicated loud and clear. Transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reports that the player has explicitly prioritised Barcelona, with sources confirming that despite Real Madrid's heavyweight interest and the glamour of the Santiago Bernabeu, the Catalan club remains his first choice.

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has corroborated this stance, revealing that Alvarez has already informed Atletico of his desire to leave. "If Julian could choose between all the teams he has, he would go to Barca," Moretto told Marca.

The stumbling block now is purely financial. Atletico rejected Madrid's €150m proposal outright, and while they want to retain their star man, Moretto suggests a bid in the region of €120-125m—the sort of fee that exceeded their asking price for Antoine Griezmann—might force a rethink. Whether Barcelona can muster such resources remains the burning question.
