Alonso Targets Wirtz Reunion as Chelsea Pursue 'Sensational' Liverpool Swoop

Xabi Alonso's first task as Chelsea's new manager appears to include a rather ambitious shopping list. The Spanish tactician has reportedly identified Liverpool's Florian Wirtz as a priority summer target, keen to reignite the partnership they forged during their Bayer Leverkusen days.

The timing could hardly be worse for Chelsea's finances. Fresh off a calamitous 2025/26 campaign that saw two managerial sackings and a failure to secure European football, the west London club faces a summer of necessity rather than luxury. Yet Alonso, who has been handed greater transfer authority than his predecessors, appears determined to pursue the attacking midfielder nonetheless.

Wirtz's maiden season at Anfield has been underwhelming by Liverpool's standards—hardly the breakthrough many anticipated when the Merseyside club splashed out up to £116million for his services from Leverkusen just twelve months ago. That apparent stumble has caught Chelsea's attention, with Football Insider claiming the Blues believe they've spotted an opening. The report suggests Liverpool would entertain a sale should suitable terms materialise, though the club would scarcely admit as much publicly.

Realistically, however, this represents little more than blue-sky thinking from Chelsea's perspective. Their well-documented financial troubles make such an ambitious acquisition fanciful rather than feasible.

The transfer churn at Stamford Bridge will flow in the opposite direction first. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen has signalled his intention to depart, having informed the club's head of global goalkeeping Ben Roberts that he craves consistent first-team action. The 24-year-old, recruited from Villarreal for £20.7million in 2024, has found opportunities frustratingly limited. Chelsea previously blocked his exit in January but appear willing to facilitate a summer departure on reasonable commercial terms, accepting that his pathway to regular minutes remains severely constrained.
