Jones Row Opens Inter Milan Door as Liverpool Weigh Emergency Options

Liverpool's transfer window just got considerably more complicated, with Curtis Jones at the centre of an emerging subplot that could see the 25-year-old midfielder depart Anfield before the deadline.

Reports emerged on Friday suggesting an on-pitch confrontation between Jones and manager Arne Slot has created an opening for Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan to swoop. The development comes as something of a surprise given Jones' status as a lifelong Liverpool supporter, though he has featured in 29 matches this season.

Inter have tabled a formal proposal: a loan arrangement with a €40m option to buy, complete with wages covered by the Italian club. As it stands, Liverpool have not given their blessing to the deal, leaving the ball firmly in their court.

Tottenham had previously circled Jones earlier in January with genuine intent before pivoting to sign Conor Gallagher. Now Inter's interest represents a fresh avenue for the midfielder should relations between player and manager remain strained.

Dumfries Inquiry Goes Nowhere

On the same day, Liverpool made contact with Inter regarding right-back Denzel Dumfries, prompted by an injury crisis in their defensive ranks following Jeremie Frimpong's latest setback.

However, the Reds' interest looks destined to remain purely exploratory. Dumfries carries a release clause worth approximately €20m-€25m, though this is only activated during the summer window. More significantly, Liverpool would only entertain a loan move, whereas Inter have made clear they will not negotiate temporary departures.

The injury to Dumfries himself is not expected to prove long-term, with recovery anticipated within 10-20 days. This further diminishes the urgency around any potential arrangement.

Liverpool's enquiry was exploratory in nature—a club-to-club conversation born from necessity rather than a serious negotiating position. For now, that avenue appears closed.
