The biggest risk from every round of the 2018 NFL Draft

The NFL Draft was full of surprises. There were many picks that were shocking. There were some prospects that went way earlier than expected, and others that were available to be picked way longer than they should have been.

While every pick in the draft has risk, some were way more risky than others. Whether it be off the field issues, character concerns, durability issues, or even questions about talent/fit, there were some picks that seem very uncertain to work out. Some teams hope such problems can be fixed in the NFL, but this is not the case more often than not. Yes, with high risk comes high reward, but history tells us this philosophy can get teams into trouble. I wish all the draftees could be successful in the NFL, but sadly that is not how it works. Below are the biggest risks from every round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Round 1: Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills (7th overall)

I completely understand this move by the Bills, but it was a huge risk. Josh Allen might have the highest ceiling of any player in this draft class, but he also may have the lowest floor. The Wyoming product stands 6’5″ and has a cannon for an arm, but he also has accuracy issues that may be hard to correct in the NFL. Allen is the one of the most polarizing players in this draft class. He is a high risk, high reward prospect. Boom or bust. If things do pan out, Allen could develop into one of the best at the position. If they don’t, the Bills will look foolish. I do applaud Bills GM Brandon Beane for going all in on Allen, but it fair to say doing so was very risky. If Allen pans out, no one will care what the Bills paid to move up to get him, just like the situation with Carson Wentz in Philadelphia.

Runner Up: Marcus Davenport, DE, New Orleans Saints

This is nothing against Davenport, but more rather about what the Saints gave up to get him. Giving up two First Round Picks to move up to select a small-school star was a huge risk. Just like the Bills trade for Josh Allen, if Davenport works out no one will really remember what the Saints gave up.
